In 2016, the Healthy China 2030 Plan Outline proposed standards and regulations for health and medical tourism and called for internationally competitive destinations. Over the past 20 years, global medical tourism has become one of the fastest-growing emerging industries, now at trillion-dollar scale, with projected annual growth of 15% to 25%.
On May 30, 2023, the International Medical Tourism Branch of the Chinese Non-Governmental Medical Institutions Association was officially established in Shanghai, marking a new stage of standardized development for international medical tourism in China's social-sector healthcare institutions.
As a pilot institution for international medical tourism in Shanghai, SIMC upholds its core philosophy of making medical services full of care. The campus features an approximately 10,000-square-meter Suzhou-style garden with bridges, water features, and landscape details that enhance the patient experience.
In recent years, SIMC has combined traditional Chinese medicine特色 services with modern care pathways, actively exploring an international medical tourism model with Shanghai characteristics and organizing multiple experiential public-education programs.
Going forward, SIMC will continue to align with and serve the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone, cultivate competitive medical-tourism service products, and act as a pioneer in Shanghai's international medical tourism service development.
